My uncle has always told me that the best thing to do is to inspire love in others. It’s always been a goal of mine. I realize now that it’s because my mom is his hero, and that’s exactly what she does. I grew up watching my mom inspire love in all those around her. Everyone loves Nancy. You’re a fool not to. She radiates kindness, selflessness, and that touch of chingona energy that just makes you love her. She will do anything for her friends, and everyone is her friend. This has always been the case.
There’s always been a lot of love in my life because people have always gravitated towards my mom. I watched her be kind to those who were in need, those who were strange, those who had much more than us, and those with nothing. Everyone was worth the time and energy.
My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, just 2 years after my grandma battled it. It was the hardest thing to happen to our family, especially during covid. The support came out in droves. Everyone wanted to know how they could help and they all did. The idea that it takes a village is true, and my mom had amassed a country.
I find myself in a similar situation now. In the two weeks I was in the hospital, I had a family and friends visiting every day. Flowers, snacks, and goodies constantly made their way into my room. Even my nurses came in for some after-hours chisme, and I had an x-ray tech who I read tarot for.

After making it home, the love continues to pour in. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. I see that I get to be like my mom in yet another way, and for me, that means offering my kindness to all and offering my vulnerability to those that pass the vibe check.

In doing so, I feel I’ve inspire a lot of love in my life. It’s evident in the way people showed up for me when I got sick, the get well soon card I got from my nurses, the sincere well wishes and support from my new colleagues, and the genuine support and care from both new and seasoned friends and loved ones.
